Neon Genesis Evangelion: Nagisa Kaworu

Although Kaworu is classified as an Angel, he is actually more similar to Ayanami Rei in being a Seed of Life that inhabits a human body. Kaworu does not consider himself to be human, however, as he refers to humans as “the Lilin” of “spawns of Lilith”. It appears that Kaworu’s body was created as a result of the Contact Experiment with Adam, wherein DNA from an unknown human donor dove into and fused with Adam’s flesh. SEELE salvaged Adam’s disembodied soul into Kaworu, whom they had recovered in embryonic form in Antarctica.

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo: Nagisa Kaworu

The Fifth Child of the Seventh Angel, Tabris, Nagisa Kaworu was first introduced in Evangelion as a replacement pilot for Unit 02 when Soryu Asuka Langley’s synchronization levels fell below usability. When Ikari Shiji was humming Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, Kaworu commented that music was beautiful, and the two began to strike a friendship. It was later revealed that Kaworu was no ordinary human, but the 17th and final Angel.

Chinese cosplayers ItsukiMU and Kery have come together in one World Cosplay account, so I’m not sure which is who at this point, but they are also the same cosplayers behind Clear! Please show them your support by visiting their World Cosplay account! Thanks to Meirin for sending this in!

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance: Shikinami Asuka Langley 03

When Asuka is introduced in Evangelion: 2.0, her character has a lot of notable changes from the original series, including her psychological profile. Although she appears to be as hot-headed as she was originally, she seems more quiet and far less of a “brat”. She still likes Shinji and refers to him in the same manner, but she is more open with herself in accepting that she likes him. Nevertheless, as difficult a person Asuka may be, she is not unreasonable and broken.

Cute cosplayer with an attitude from Japan Comiket 83! I think she may be hiding an eye patch under her bangs as we see Asuka in the preview of 3.0. And I really love the expression on her face. Thanks again to Marcello for letting me share this!

The pilot with an enigmatic personality, Mari is the only one among the Eva pilots who genuinely enjoys piloting. Her repeated comments suggest that she has a liking to the smell of LCL, an amber-colored, translucent liquid that allows the pilot to mentally link with their Evangelion Unit. It is implied that Mari works for an unknown third party, and a pilot designation has not been provided, assuming Mari actually has one.

The second of four films released in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance is the winner of the French Lyon Asian Film Festival’s Animation category, narrowly beating “Symphony in August” in an audience vote back in 2009. The film also won Excellent Animation of the Year from the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year in 2010. Stills and draft materials by Anno Hideaki were exhibited at Künstlerhaus Bethanien as part of the Proto Anime Cut exhibition from January to March 2011, with a European tour planned in summer 2012.

Ok, so this group changed Ikari Shinji and Nagisa Kaworu into girls, but hey, is anyone really complaining? And for those of you who want to see more of these cosplayers, please refer to the video below. Thanks to Felicia for sending this in!

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Soryu Asuka Langley 08

In “The End of Evangelion”, the Japanese Strategic Self Defense Force invaded NERV, forcing the team to place the mentally disturbed Asuka inside Unit-02, which was then submerged in a lake within the Geofront for her protection. As she was bombarded by depth charges, Asuka declared that she did not want to die and, in a moment of clarity, realized that her mother's soul was within the Eva and has been protecting her all along. With her self-identity regained, she emerged from the lake and defeated the JSSDF before being confronted by the Mass Produced Evas.

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance: Ayanami Rei and Makinami Mari Illustrious 02

When the Tenth Angel began its rampage, Mari hijacked Unit-02 in order to head out to fight Zeruel, activating Unit-02’s second best mode “The Beast”, thereby removing the unit’s restraints. In this mode, Mari successfully smashed through most of Zeruel’s multiple AT Fields, but was still unfortunately taken out by the Angel’s rapid extending blade-like arms.

It was then that Rei’s damaged Unit-00 emerged onto the battlefield and charged at Zeruel with an N² mine-armed missile. The battered Unit-02 tore through the Angel’s remaining AT Fields and Unit-00 threw Unit-02 out of the blast radius before the missile detonates.

Despite their combined effort, however, the missile failed to destroy Zeruel, and blew off Unit-00’s arms in the process.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Ayanami Rei 13

In “The End of Evangelion”, the third Rei acted as the main catalyst behind Third Impact, which was initiated after she fused with Lilith. During Third Impact, a shining figure of Rei was shown for a few frames looking down at Katsuragi Misato and Akagi Ritsuko moments before they died. These spectral images also appeared over the corpses of the slain Nerv personnel.

Miyamura Yuko, Asuka's Japanese voice actress, noted that “Asuka wasn't the most open-hearted character I've ever met… every time I tried to draw myself in closer synchronization, Asuka would never allow herself to sync with ‘me’… One day, I figured out that there was a wall in Asuka's heart.” as translated by William Flanagan. Much later, she included that working on the series was “very hard” and that at times she had “wanted to erase Evangelion.”

I know I featured Kanda Midori as Asuka before, but we didn’t really get to see her face in that photo, and this is the uniform version anyway. Thanks to Daniela for sending this in!

Neon Gensis Evangelion: Soryu Asuka Langley and Ayanami Rei

Although Asuka started out with a high synchronization ratio and exceptional skills as an Eva pilot, her defeat in battle by the Angel Zeruel caused her self-confidence to dwindle, losing her effectiveness as a pilot. Asuka became infuriated when she was ordered to serve as Rei’s backup, and decided to launch herself in Unit 02 to attack the Angel alone. She paid the price for her recklessness, however, as she was overwhelmed by its attack, forcing her to relive painful memories which resulted in a mental and emotional breakdown.

A very lovely cosplay of Asuka by Kanda Midori and an equally stunning Rei! Too bad we have no idea who Rei’s cosplayer is. Thanks again to Fumiki for sending this in!

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance: Shikinami Asuka Langley

In the four-film, re-imagining of the TV series, Asuka was not introduced until the second film, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. Several changes have been made to her character, including changing her family name from Soryu to Shikinami, and her holding the rank of captain of the Euro Airforce. She is no longer infatuated with Kaji Ryoji, ignoring an invitation to go on a trip with him until Katsuragi Misato forced her to go. Asuka is also the test pilot for Unit 03 instead of Suzuhara Toji, but she survived the Evangelion possession by an Angel.

That’s an amazing bodysuit cosplayed by Ushijima! It makes me wonder how cosplayers can make these things so well. Thanks to Kohta for sharing this!

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Ayanami Rei 11

Anno Hideki instructed Sadamoto Yoshiyuki when he was designing Ayanami Rei that "Whatever else, she needs to be painted in as a bitterly unhappy young girl with little sense of presence."

Needless to say, Sadamoto-sensei was able to achieve that effect flawlessly!

In the beginning of the series, Rei is socially withdrawn, appearing to be an emotionless girl who rarely interacted with anyone except for Ikari Gendo. She is known to be living by herself in a dull, sparsely-furnished apartment in Tokyo-3.

Such a convincingly beautiful cosplay! Even the setting is perfect! I wonder if they’re in a lab of some sort? Thanks to Pia for sending this in!

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Ayanami Rei 10

In “The End of Evangelion”, the third Ayanami Rei acted as the main catalyst behind Third Impact, an event that was initiated after she fused with Lilith. Neon Genesis Evangelion: Soryu Asuka Langley 05

First introduced in episode 8 with the arrival of the Eva Unit 02, Soryu Asuka Langley is shown maintaining a high synchronization ratio and exceptional skills as an Eva pilot. With the battle against the Angel Gaghiel, Asuka proved to be very aggressive and confident in battle. However, when she was first defeated in the fight against Zeruel, Asuka’s self-confidence begins to dwindle, affecting her effectiveness as a pilot.

Kipi makes such a cute Asuka that I had to feature her again. But I’m not sure if this breaks any of blogger’s rules in blogging, so please let me know otherwise so I can delete this just in case!

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Ayanami Rei 09

Although there are no specific information given about Rei’s origin or heritage, Akagi Ritsuko stated in Neon Genesis Evangelion that Rei was born in a certain room deep in the lower levels of Nerv headquarters. In addition, the Red Cross Book stated that Rei was created from the “salvaged remains” of Ikari Yui after she was absorbed into the Unit 01 in 2004. Ikari Gendo introduced Rei to the Nerv staff in 2010 as an “acquaintance’s child” whom he was temporarily taking care of, but Akagi Naoko noted that Rei physically resembled Yui.
