In March 2008, Japan’s Foreign Ministry appointed
Doraemon as the nation's first “anime ambassador”. The Ministry spokesman explained that the novel decision was an attempt to help people in other countries understand Japanese anime better, as well as to deepen their interest in Japanese culture. The Foreign Ministry’s action confirms that Doraemon is now considered to be a Japanese cultural icon.
On September 3, 2012, Doraemon was granted official residence in the city of Kawasaki, celebrating one hundred years before he was born.
No wonder there’s another pair of cosplayers from the series this year. I didn’t know Doraemon was still this popular. Thanks again to 4chanatic for sending this in!
