China's Cosplay Boom

I was watching NHK Newsline yesterday and saw an interesting segment about “China’s Growing Love Affair with Cosplay”. Apparently, cosplay events are being held in Beijing every weekend! That’s right, every weekend!!!

And this hobby is not limited to the fans of anime and manga. A politician from the city of Shaoxing is cosplaying in order to promote local tourists spots where plum flowers were in bloom. And she is getting a lot of positive reactions for her photos!

One cosplayer, Liu Siqi, is a freshman at a university who says cosplaying allows her to escape from reality. And that she likes meeting and making new friends through events.

I’m sure a lot of cosplayers will agree with Liu, but events every weekend? If that were to happen in the Philippines, I wonder if event organizers would be able to earn any profit? What’s more, cosplaying is a fairly expensive hobby!

Unknown Cosplay #158

After nearly a year, we now have another entry for the Unknown Section! Could it be a cause for a celebration, or maybe evidence of the admin’s laziness/incompetence?

This is undoubtedly stayxxx, but I don’t know who she is cosplaying as! I want to say it’s Yatogami Kuro from K Project, or maybe Saito Hajime from Hakuoki, but that gash on her forehead is making me doubt it’s one or the other! Perhaps you guys have a better idea who the character might be? Thanks to hoang hieu bang for sharing this!

Unknown Cosplay #157

Well, I honestly think this is Kipi cosplaying her version of Alice from Alice in Wonderland, but I thought it would be best to ask my readers too. I know there are many adaptations of Alice in anime and games like “Alice in the Kingdom of Hearts”, but I’m pretty sure Kipi is not cosplaying the protagonist from that series.

I realize this might sound really bad as a cosplay judge, but I forgot who the character the cosplayer is portraying as! I’m really sorry! But I do remember his performance which started with a few, heavy sword slashes and ended with a short dance of PSY’s “Gentleman”. I would have posted the Gentleman photo of this cosplay if it wasn’t so blurry!

If anyone can tell me who this character is and who’s the cosplayer underneath the armor, feel free to comment!

I don’t know if I’ve been listening to too much Kpop lately, but she reminds me of one of the members from Girls Generation. The had an album called “Genie” which has a cover art of the girls in Air Force uniforms, but I don’t think this is a cosplay of that at all.

Another day, another unknown cosplay.

I don’t know about you guys, but this guessing game brings back a lot of great memories. And I’m hoping you’re having fun with it too.

Now then, kawaii girl with the orange and while kimono styled costume, I wonder who might you be? And I also wonder why your cosplay really reminds me of Yuna from Final Fantasy X? Possibly the cut-off sleeves and hairstyle? Maybe?

I’d really like to know where this character came from because the design of her cosplay is really intricate! It must have been pretty expensive to make! Plus, she really stands out among the otaku crowd wouldn’t you agree?

First of all, let me just say that the details of her cosplay are simply amazing! Just look at all the little ribbons and lace! Someone must have spent a long time putting this costume together for the cosplayer’s Comiket 83 debut!

But who could this girl be? The design seems too specific to be just be a random blond, French maid!

I’m beginning to wonder why there are a lot of blond anime, manga, and game characters. Anyway, thanks to Katie for sending this in!

You’ve gotta love and admire the detailing the cosplayer went through for this armored cosplay. Now only that, but the cosplayer probably had to see the world in green all day. That’s probably not much of a problem for some, but I know my eyes would be bothering me all day if I had to do the same thing!

Unknown Entry 127

One thing I learned from attending my first cosplay convention in a long time is that there are really a lot of characters that I don’t recognize. Is it because I’m that far out of the loop or that there are really a lot of new anime and games coming out these days?

Well, the good thing about this blog is that I can post as many photos of unknown cosplays I want. Some people have been treating this like a game every week, which is all good for me.

It was hard to miss this guy at the convention because he was by the entrance of the Sky Dome. I’m not sure if he was there on purpose, but people were snapping photos of him every 2 minutes! I kinda felt bad for him being stuck there, but it looked like he was having fun (at least, I’d like to think so).

I really love this week’s Unknown Cosplay. Red and black with a little white always makes a uniform look so cool, especially with the gold trimmings!

To be honest, she looks like she could be part of the security team in Japan’s 77th Comiket, but why the gun holster without a gun? Maybe she’s holding it behind her back?

And here to celebrate my centennial lack of otaku knowledge, we have Japanese cosplayer Akasan and her cosplay photo from Winter Comiket 2010!

Apparently, a lot of people are debating whether Akasan is cute or scary! I don’t think she’s scary at all, but her photos do look heavily photoshoped? I’m not sure though because I’m not really an expert in the field!

To be completely honest, I’m not even sure if she’s cosplaying at all. I mean, I think girls who wear kimonos are just as common in anime conventions as girls who were seifuku and French Maid uniforms.

I originally thought this cosplayer was from the game Steins;Gate because she is holding a pamphlet featuring Makise Kurisu on the cover. I think I am sadly mistaken, because I wasn’t able to find any character listed that bears the same description.

So many great cosplays from Comiket this year… I don’t think I can keep up with my emails any more.

In any case! I’m wondering about this particular photo. The first character that came to mind was Tosaka Rin from Fate/Stay Night. I think she wore a maid uniform in Ataraxia or Zero, but I think her skirt was a lot longer in that series.
