Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~: Hijikata Toshizo 03

Although feared for being a strict disciplinarian, Hijikata believes that it is his duty to rule with an iron fist as the shadow behind Kondou’s light. He is thoughtful, mature, and takes the Shinsengumi’s welfare to be his personal responsibility. Hijikata can also be described as prideful, as he dislikes accepting help from others believing it makes him appear weak. He does, however, place the survival of the Shinsengumi above honor.

Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~: Saito Hajime 06

Very little is known about Saito’s past, but it is said that he is the first-born of a prestigious samurai clan in Edo. However, being strongly left-handed left him unable to learn their clan’s sword techniques, but he compensated by learning and mastering the Iaijutsu. Saito was falsely accused of murdering a fellow clansman despite being challenged to a duel and was later exiled from his clan.

Excuse me while I find some tissues for my bleeding nose. Saito’s probably going to be my most favorite character from the series forever. Thanks to Demi for sharing this!

According to the Drama CD’s, Saitou claims that he will take swords over women any day. In fact, he loves swords so much that he could talk about them for hours on end. In general, he is quite shy towards girls, but he always puts the safety of others above his own.

Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~: Okita Souji 04

Okita Souji drank the Water of Life hoping that it would cure his tuberculosis and allow him to return and fight alongside the Shinsengumi. Although he did become a Rasetsu, it was later discovered that he is unable to heal quickly when wounded by silver weapons. The accelerated healing process also shortens one’s lifespan, and it does not completely heal Souji of his fatal illness.

Fueled by rage after witnessing his fellow Shinsengumi warrior Inoue Genzaburo dead, Hijikata Toshizo decided to drink the Ochimizu and become a Rasetsu despite knowing the consequences simply to defeat Kazama Chikage. Even though Inoue had been killed by Satchou warriors of the Satsuma-Choushuu alliance, Hijikata blamed Chikage and started a duel as Chikage goads him.

Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~: Okita Souji 03

Driven by guilty for being incapacitated by tuberculosis, Okita Souji drank the elixir and became a Rasetsu in order to continue with his duties as the Captain of the First Division. Unfortunately, despite having accelerated healing, it does not completely cure his illness. It does, however, allow him to live out his final days somewhat normally, even if it would seem to be arguably shorter.

I’m sorry, but after I finished Souji’s route in the game, I felt really terrible. Then again, I don’t think any of the routes in Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~ ended happily knowing some of your comrades died in the war. Anyway, thanks to Jenny for sending this in!

Hakuoki: Zuisouroku: Saito Hajime 04

At the end of Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~ anime, Saito was last seen charging against the enemy while his comrades are all slain. History tells us that the real Saito survived even after Aizuwakamatsu Castle fell. He traveled southwest along with former Aizu retainers to the Takada Domain in Echigo Province, where they were held as prisoners of war.

Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~: Saito Hajime 03

In the anime, Saito has had very little interaction with Yukimura Chizuru until the second season. He was then training new Shinsengumi recruits as well as monitoring the Rasetsu Unit’s actions. Saito once told Chizuru that he thought being a bushi meant being an exceptional swordsman. Chizuru responded that Saito was a true samurai because he has honor.

Gotta love 無題。 for sharing this beautiful cosplay. I think this outfit was only for the calendar and figure, so not a lot of people might recognize it. Thanks to Lira for sending this in!

Hakuoki: Hetukuturoku: Hijikata Toshizo

The Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, Hijikata Toshizo is often called oni-fukuchou or “the Demon Vice-Commander” due to his strict nature - demanding both respect and fear from his men. He makes most of the Shinsengumi’s decisions, and was the one who ordered to bring Yukimura Chizuru back to headquarters the night she witnessed their “secret”. Although he acts as if Chizuru is more trouble that she’s worth, he actually cares quite deeply for her safety and often protects her in battle.

Beautiful cosplay by Tooya of World Cosplay! Hijikata is probably one of the characters I felt most pity for when I read his real story in the history of Japan. It feels harsh for someone so young to die in war. Thanks to Miki-chan for sending this!

Hakuoki: Zuisouroku: Saito Hajime 02

Saito Hajime once left the Shinsengumi to apparently join Kashitarou Itou's group of Imperial National Guards. However, it was later revealed that he was under orders from Hijikata Toshizo to infiltrate and gather information regarding Itou’s plans. He successfully completes his mission and returns to the Shinsengumi after Itou’s assassination.

I don’t know what it is about this photo that’s so mesmerizing, but it’s a highly convincing cosplay of Saito! Thanks again to Michelle for sending this in!

Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~: Saito Hajime

The leader of the Third Division of the Shinsengumi, Saito Hajime is a master of Iai, a martial arts technique where one strikes and finishes off their opponent in one smooth motion from the starting point of the sword inside its sheath. He is silent and taciturn but is also very loyal, polite, and wise. He is also very analytical, often studying the situation before attacking to calculate which actions are necessary to complete the mission.

I’ve recently purchased a copy of Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom. I must admit, I never thought I’d feel so depressed just from playing a game. Heavy, accurate, and well-written story lines so far, but I just wish I could stop feeling so down about it. Thanks to Misaki-chan for sharing Jin Joson’s cosplay of my favorite character!

Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~: Okita Souji 02

In a battle against Chikage Kazama, Okita Souji began coughing blood and was later diagnosed with tuberculosis. Yukimura Chizuru tried to stop Okita from fighting, but quickly became Chikage’s target. Okita told Chikage that he is his opponent, and Chikage told him that his job was already done when Okita first arrived. Chikage then vanished, leaving Okita who collapsed from his illness.

Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~: Okita Souji

Despite suffering from tuberculosis, Okita Souji is a brilliant swordsman and Captain of the First Division. He was later given a bottle of Ochimizu in order to “cure” his illness. Although he became a Rasetsu, the Shinsengumi discovered that he had one weakness, Souji could only heal at human speed when he was injured by silver weapons.

Beautifully portrayed Souji by Deviant Artist Lirlys! I really love the setting for this cosplay, and her boots are simply gorgeous. Thanks to Lady Audrey for the contribution and ~yaci-chan for the awesome photography!
