DC Comics: Justice League 02

dc comics cosplay - justice league

Back in the 1970’s, every superhero fan wanted to go to Ohio or Florida to see their favorite superhero waterskiing in Sea World. The show ran from 1976 to 1979, featuring talented skiers in their late teens of early twenties. This promotional poster does not even feature all of the skiers in the show according to Noblemania.

For this feature though? Let’s pa tribute to the following:

Wonder Woman by Kaci Whittenton (Hedstrum)
Batgirl by (currently unknown)
Supergirl by Gay Schwartz (Peteet)
Mera by Debbie Blake
Black Canary by Randi Tetrick
Robin by Randy Messer
Batman by Randy Jones
Superman by Andy Hansen
Aquaman by Tom Weber
Flash by Sharkey Schwartz

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Ross!

Amnesia: Ukyo

amnesia cosplay - ukhyo by lunasuki

Ukyo is a famous photographer who suffer from a split-personality disorder. Although he is truly very kind and loyal, Ukyo’s alternate personality can be villainous and menacing. He is said to be the true lover of the Heroine who was forced to witness her death several times in his attempts to save her.

Thai cosplayer, Lunasuki, makes an absolutely stunning Ukyo! It seems this otome game has become quite popular, and now I’m curious to check out the anime myself. Thanks to Janie for sending this in!

Time ceaselessly invites me towards the path of solitude

The details on Green Makakas’ cosplay of Lelouch Lamperouge is just insane! And the location is pretty awesome too! Wouldn’t you want to see this in person? Thanks to Candice for sending this in!

Sailor Moon: Aino Minako

sailor moon cosplay - aino minako by lucien-fleurier

Athletic, cheerful, and resilient, Aino Minako takes her role as the “Soldier of Love” seriously, and enjoys regaling her friends with advice about romance. Although she can be irrational and overambitious at times, she can also be refined and elegant when there is a need to do so. At one point in the manga, she told the other Sailor Senshi that she was the princess they were looking for, acting as a decoy to protect the real princess, Tsukino Usagi.

Lucien Fleurier makes a wonderful Minako! And her cat, Richard, also plays well as Artemis! I think the orange nail polish was a nice touch, wouldn’t you agree? Thanks to Serah for sending this in!

Japanese Cosplayer Loses Over 100 pounds for Cosplay

When 19-year-old Motoyoshi Kanna first cosplayed her favorite character, Tieria Erde, a lot of people mocked her because of her weight. She was over 200 pounds at the time.

motoyoshi kanna before and after

Now, she weights a petit 99 pounds and cosplays without worry of getting bullied.

motoyoshi kana as lacus clyne

I commend her for her wonderful achievement, because losing weight is no easy task! However, Kotaku writer, Brian Ashcraft, also made a valid point:

Look, people should be able to do what they want. If someone wants to cosplay as a certain character, and their body (or skin color or gender or whatever!) isn't an exact match, who cares. They shouldn't be made to feel bad about that.

And if somebody wants to lose a lot of weight (though, this certainly seems extreme), that's their decision. However, they shouldn't feel compelled to do so to meet preconceived notions that other people have or unrealistic artistic renditions. They should do it for themselves.

I have to say though, I can relate to this very much. I also want to cosplay, but I’m very scared of what people will say since I’m not really skinny. Maybe one day I will be courage enough to cosplay too, once I lose another 30 pounds?

Fairy Tail: Aries

fairy tail cosplay - ariesAries, “The White Lamb”, is one of the Celestial Spirits of the 12 Golden Zodiac Keys. She resembles a young girl with pink hair, brown eyes, and a pair of twisted horns on her head. Aries is very sweet and kind, and has a tendency to apologize habitually, even though she didn’t do anything wrong.

She looks absolutely adorable! Definitely very much like the real Aries, wouldn’t you agree? Thanks to Sherwin for sending this in!

Princess Tutu: Ahiru

princess tutu cosplay - ahiru by dayu

A friendly and kind-hearted duck, Ahiru was turned into a human girl by Drosselmeyer with the use of a magical pendant. When Ahiru removes the pendant or quacks while talking, she is turned back into a duck. She must then touch the water in order to return to her human form. Like a duck, Ahiru is easily excitable, clumsy, and talkative.

Korean cosplayer Dayu makes a really cute Ahiru! And I really love her expression in this photo! Please visit her World Cosplay account for more of her cosplays! Thanks again to Lain for sending this in!

Kill la Kill: Matoi Ryuko

Matoi Ryuko is a vagrant school girl who transferred to Honnouji Academy in hopes of finding clues relating to the death of her father. Her favored weapon is her father’s creation - the Scissor Blade, which is only half of a giant pair of scissors, as the other half was stolen by her father’s killer. The Scissor Blade is capable of destroying uniforms empowered by Life Fibers.

A beautiful cosplay by HappyHaha with photography by Beethy! Everyone seems to be into this show lately, maybe I should check it our myself. Thanks to Mila for sending this in!

Queen's Blade: Nanael

Ichigo Rei asked:
Have you ever been to conventions outside your own country? And if so, are there any differences between them?
Let me say first for those who do not know it yet, I’m from the Philippines. I do go to some conventions here, but since I am usually a seller, I don’t really have a lot of time to roam around and take photos of cosplayers.

To answer Ichigo’s question, yes, I have gone to conventions in two other countries: Sakura Con 2004 in Seattle, USA, and Anime Evolution 2004 in Vancouver, Canada. I guess in the US and Canada, conventions tend to have a lot more going on, all at the same time? There’s an event hall with an emcee, yes, but they also have theater rooms that show anime episodes and movies if you’re not interested in watching the program. Sakura Con also had a lot of special guests, including anime directors, Japanese and American voice actors, and a lots of anime and manga artists. They even had a mini concert and a cosplay ball.

Both the conventions I went to in the West also lasted until far into the evening. Not to mention, their events are usually in fairly huge locations, so it’s well worth the money spent for your entrance fee!

I have to say though, even though local conventions are a lot of fun too. And since local conventions are smaller, we tend to have more time to talk to our favorite manga artists and give them gifts! I’ve yet to try being a seller in Western Cons, but I’m sure they’re just as fun.

Anyway, I hope that answers your question! Feel free to ask me more questions via the comment section of this post. As for this week’s feature, please do let me know if you have any idea who she is cosplaying as! Thanks, Marcello!

EDIT: Thanks to San Celluz for letting me know that she is Nanael from Queen's Blade!

Ok, no, my translation is probably not right at all, but this is the only one that made sense to me! If any of the lyrics need correction, please let me know, ok?

I really need to get back to studying my Japanese, if only I could find my workbook! But anyway, thanks to Marcello for letting me share this! And please visit his Flickr album too for more photos from Japan Comiket 85!

K: Yatogami Kuro

k cosplay - yatogami kuro by nadleeh

A highly skilled swordsman known as the Black Hound, Yatogami Kuro is on a mission to hunt down the next “Colorless King” on behalf of his late King and father, Miwa Ichigen. Although he appears to be cold and ruthless, he gave Yashiro a chance to prove his innocence with regards to the murder of Totsuka. He began to monitor Yashiro closely, pretending to be a transfer student at Yashiro’s school.

This really does look like Kuro! I really love Nadleeh’s wig for this cosplay! It looks so smooth and shiny! Thanks to Eri for sending this in!
