So, you want to cosplay a character and have a cool sword to go with it… However, buying the actual sword would be expensive, and you might not even be able to bring it to the convention your planning to attend because it may be considered to be a deadly weapon. In some conventions, swords made out of wood have also been banned, and it would be hard to learn wood carving on your own.
In this video, Returacan makes a sword from the now infamous Sword Art Online out of paper, popsicle sticks, and lots of glue. I used his techniques in supporting the inside of Rei’s Fireblade, which worked out pretty well and passed security no problem.
The video is pretty long, but you can check out his very long list of paper sword tutorials in his youtube account. For starters, you can learn how to make hardened paper first, then jump into his six step process in making a paper sword:
- Sword Template
- Cutting Out the Blade / Sword
- Supporting the Sword
- Hardening and Sealing the Blade
- Covering the Wooden Support: Part 1 and Part 2 (the reason being split into two videos instead of one is actually hilarious)
- Finishing the Handle
Good luck in making your paper swords! I hope this will be as helpful to you as it was to me!
